Laparoscopic Prostatectomy

18/1/2005

Surgery for organ confined prostate cancer is now carried out using minimally invasive techniques

Laparoscopic surgery minimises the trauma required to remove the prostate and associated tissues and studies have shown that the complication rate is much lower for keyhole surgery as compared to standard open surgery.

Mr Wright has now carried out over 80 laparoscopic procedures and the BUA team are increasingly convinced that it is a much safer form of surgery.

A Telescopic camera is used to give the surgeon a magnified operative field and three further puncture sites are used to allow access for the laparoscopic instruments.

Due to the decreased trauma, a postoperative epidural is NOT used and most patients are eating and drinking the evening after their surgery. Activity is resumed the day after the operation and most patients are discharged from hospital 48 hours after surgery.
