    Professor Joe Philip is a Fellowship trained Specialist Urological Surgeon. He was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon at Bristol Urological Institute in 2011, after his higher specialist urology training in the Mersey region & Birmingham. His specialist practice includes:

    • • Diagnosis and surgery for stone disease
    • • Endoscopic upper tract urothelial cancer management
    • • Urological cancer diagnostics

    Also investigates and undertakes procedures for patients with-

    • • Blood in the urine
    • • Urinary flow/ prostate problems
    • • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
    • • Urinary bladder dysfunction (including frequency, urgency, incontinence)
    • • Peno-scrotal surgery such as circumcision, epididymal cyst excision and hydrocele repair

     

    Joe has published over 40 papers and has lectured around the world. He is an International Professor with the Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation (AHERF), India; Honorary Professor of Urology at the School of Medicine, Bridgetown International University, Barbados and Honorary Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, Mathematics & Technology at the University of Bristol, U.K. In addition, he serves as a Trustee/Advisor on National Committees and has been the Endourology Section editor for the Journal of Clinical Urology. Professor Philip is the President Elect of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS). Joe works with the President, Trustees, Council and Executive team to deliver BAUS strategy programs focused on Education, Membership & Workforce.

    His research interests are in kidney stones disease and improving on differential attainment. His group looks into evaluating risk factors for sepsis, increased hospital stay and morbidity in patients who undergo stone procedures and outcomes of shockwave lithotripsy. Attempts at identifying risk factors for recurrence of stone disease, including with the use of Machine learning continue.

    Professor Philip has been conferred the 2026 Honorary Membership by the Urological Society of India for work that has significantly advanced science and practice of urology and strengthened bonds of academic collaboration and friendship across nations. He is the 2024 recipient of the KAMS (UK) award for Outstanding contribution to the field of Urological Surgery & the 2023 APEX Healthcare Excellency Award for Excellence in Healthcare.
